How Long Do Big Berkey Water Filters Last?

Big Berkey water filters are some of the most popular models in the water filtration industry. Since they are made with stainless steel and quality filters, they tend to last a long time with proper care. Let’s talk about how to get the most out of your Big Berkey water filter system.

Potential Threats To Your Water System

Unless you try to break your Big Berkey, you won’t have to worry about it. The stainless steel chambers are very durable.

A larger concern is contamination. Yes, the filters are supposed to remove these, but there are still ways for any water system to fall victim to contamination.

Bacteria, mold, mildew, and other contaminants love moisture. If there is a way for contaminants to reach the moisture in your system, then this could harm your system. The best way to prevent this is with proper maintenance.

Proper Maintenance

The best way to ensure that your Berkey filter lasts for a lifetime is to maintain it. Don’t worry. As we mentioned before, these are very low-maintenance systems.

However, cleaning your entire system every 6 months is highly recommended to prevent unwanted buildup, mold, or anything else. This includes cleaning the stainless steel chambers as well as the filtration elements.

How To Clean Your System

First, take out your filtration elements and spigot and store them on a safe, clean surface. You can clean these chambers in the sink with dish soap and warm water, or you can even place them in the dishwasher if they fit.

If you are concerned about a smell or certain contaminants in your system, using a few drops of bleach in your cleaning water is acceptable for stainless steel systems.

From there, allow the system to air dry.

Replacing Your Elements

Filter systems are known to last for up to 6,000 gallons per pair, which is more than 10 times longer than most water filters. However, if you start to notice that your system’s speed is lagging, then this is a sign that your elements need to be replaced.

Buyingtwo replacement elements will cost you $70, but it could save your system if you’re worried about contamination.

Attachments

If you have additional attachments for your Big Berkey water filter, cleaning them along with your regular system is highly recommended.

Regardless of your spigot type, wash this thoroughly. Your spigot’s constant exposure to the open air and its proximity to food and other elements could lead to contamination of your previously filtered water. Giving the tap a rinse or a wipe occasionally will help to prevent contaminants from taking hold.

How Long Should My System Last?

Assuming you are following the maintenance guidelines listed above, your system should last you for a lifetime. While these are the best practices, contaminants could take hold inanysystem, so if you ever find a reason for concern, it’s best to remove your filtering elements and give your system a thorough clean.

If you do that as needed, clean the system at least every 6 months, and replace your elements on time, then your system should last a lifetime or more! Not convinced? Well, check out ourBig Berkey lifetime warranty for good measure!
