Which Attachments Do I Need For My Big Berkey System?

by Jefferson Ebasan November 19, 2021 2 min read

While the Big Berkey system is ready to use upon purchase (after priming), some attachments will either improve the performance of the system or make certain processes easier. Here are some of the most popular additions to buy for your Berkey water system!

Best Additional Filters

While the dual filtration system that comes with the product is admirable, there are other options to choose from for specific needs. Here are the most popular filters to add to your system.

Berkey Earth Filters

Berkey’s “Earth filters” are different from the standard “black filters”, but they come at only half the cost! If you’re on a budget and don’t want the upfront cost of the black filter, then this is a great alternative.

Although, Earth filters do take up to 10 times longer to filter similar quantities of water, which is the only real sacrifice with the Earth elements, as they do tend to last as long and perform as well as the standard filters.

Arsenic/Fluoride Filters

Some cities throughout the continent have poor reputations for their water quality, which may lead some users to take matters into their own hands. This is also a major concern for households that use well water, as2.1 million homes with wells contain higher levels of arsenic than recommended by the EPA.

If you want to add an extra layer of protection from arsenic, then adding these filters is a great option for only $70 for an additional 2 filters.

Remember, most systems hold up to at least 4 filters at a time, and the largest ones hold up to 8, so you won’t need to replace your existing filters to add these.

Extra Attachments

Berkey filters come with a wide variety of attachments to choose from. Some are beneficial to certain users, but this will entirely depend on your own needs. Here are some common attachments.

Stainless Steel Spigot

If you’re looking to avoid buying replacement parts down the line, then a stainless steel spigot is a good way to start. That’s not to suggest that the standard plastic Berkey spigot won’t last you a long time, but we are suggesting that stainless steel is a permanent fixture.

If you’re interested in a long-lasting spigot that’s easy to clean, the stainless steel spigots come with ourBerkey Royal bundle.

Black Berkey Primer

Hand primers are used to quickly and easily prime your elements, which will save you time when you need to switch filters, especially if you’re using more than 2 at a time.

If you have the patience to prime your filters for a few minutes at a time for each one, then this isn’t a concern. However, if you want to make the process easier when the time comes, then a primer is a good choice for only $25.

Stainless Steel Base

The system includes a rubber base with purchase. However, some users prefer to keep their system elevated and aesthetically uniform. In that case, astainless steel base is a sturdy way to go!
