Why should I choose LiFePO4 over traditional Lead-Acid batteries?

LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries offer significant advantages over lead-acid. They provide 10x the lifespan (up to 5000+ cycles vs. 300-500), weigh about 60% less , and offer a consistent voltage discharge. Most importantly, you can safely use 100% of the battery's capacity, whereas lead-acid batteries should only be drained to 50% to avoid damage.

Do I need a special charger for Lithium batteries?

Yes, for optimal performance and safety, you should use a charger specifically designed for the Lithium charging profile. While some standard chargers may work, they often cannot charge the battery to 100% capacity or may not wake up the BMS (Battery Management System) if it enters protection mode. We recommend our MillerTech On-Board Chargers or DC-DC chargers for the best results.

What is a BMS and do these batteries have one?

A BMS (Battery Management System) is the "brain" of the battery. All LiFePO4 batteries sold at Wild Oak Trail come with a built-in, advanced BMS. This protects your battery from common hazards including overcharging, over-discharging, short circuits, and extreme temperatures, ensuring the battery operates safely for over a decade.

Can I connect these batteries in Series or Parallel?

Most of our batteries, including the MillerTech Sport and Intelligent series, are capable of being connected in Parallel (to increase capacity/amps) and Series (to increase voltage to 24V, 36V, or 48V). However, you must always check the specific datasheet for your model, as there are limits to how many can be linked. Alternatively, buying a native 24V or 48V battery is often more efficient.

Can I charge LiFePO4 batteries in freezing temperatures?

Standard Lithium batteries should not be charged below freezing (32°F / 0°C) as it can permanently damage the cells. You can discharge (use) them in the cold, but not charge them. If you live in a cold climate, we recommend looking for our batteries with internal heating elements or ensuring your battery bank is stored in a temperature-controlled environment.

What size battery do I need for my RV or Off-Grid setup?

To size your battery bank, calculate your daily energy usage in Watt-Hours (Device Watts × Hours Used). For example, a 100Ah 12V battery provides roughly 1280 Watt-Hours. If you are replacing lead-acid, remember that one 100Ah Lithium battery is roughly equivalent to two 100Ah lead-acid batteries in usable power.
