We don’t want to just tell you whether your Berkey system is safe or not. Let’s find out exactly how safe they are for harmful contaminants you may face in your water!
Even in 2022, heavy metals like lead are still a major concern. This also varies widely by municipality, the age of your plumbing system, and other factors. Fortunately, the Berkey Black elements can dramatically reduce lead and other heavy metals in your water.
However, to treat certain metals like arsenic, you will need to purchase specific filtering elements separately. If you rely on an unreputable water source, then we recommend using arsenic and fluoride reduction elements.
Many waterborne diseases, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Fortunately, the vast majority pose no threat to humans, but some do. Unfortunately, experts predict that morenewviruses are coming, much like the Covid-19 pandemic.
While Covid was not waterborne, nothing can predict what the next pandemic will bring. Tap water ishighlytreated by local governments, especially after the Clean Water Act of 1972, as well as the 2022 revisions proposed by the EPA.
However, there are alot of variances in the way state, and local governments handle water treatments in the US. Also, not everybody relies on tap water or has access to a public water grid. For that reason, many choose to take matters into their own hands.
Fortunately, all Berkey water filter systems are certified to treat at least 99.9999% of pathogenic bacteria and 99.99% of viruses. This means that even unreputable water sources are safe to use with the Black Berkey filters. We'd still recommend saving poor water for emergency situations, but the Berkey water filtration systems will still help!
So, how long will the Berkey elements keep your water safe? It depends. With proper care and a semi-reliable water source, they can last for up to 3,000 gallons (11,350 liters).
However, if you are filtering unfiltered or untreated water from a natural source, we would recommend stopping between 1,000 and 2,000 gallons. Keep your lower chamber and Black Berkey elements clean, and you should have no issues with safety. Stainless steel is strong, durable, and resistant to rusting.
Either way, remember to clean your filters once a year, which we explain how to do in our full review of Berkey water filters! If you do that, they will last for as long as possible!
Whether you want to filter the metals out of your tap water or have a reliable source of water off the grid, Berkey water filters are extremely safe for many gallons. The Berkey Black Elements filter nearly everything you need to filter, and you can buy extra filters for any particular needs you have!
