If you own a pickup truck, you're already halfway to one of the most practical camping setups available. A truck bed tent transforms your tailgate into an elevated shelter — off the ground, away from moisture and critters, with your gear stored underneath. No need for a flat campsite. No crawling into a ground tent. Just back into your spot and set up camp.
Overland Vehicle Systems makes the LD TACT Truck Bed Tent specifically for full-size pickups, and it's one of the best values in the truck tent category. But before we get into specific recommendations, let's cover what makes a truck bed tent worth it and what to look for.
Truck bed camping has advantages that ground tents and even rooftop tents can't match:
You're 2-3 feet off the ground. That means less moisture, fewer insects, better airflow, and no worrying about ground water pooling under your tent in a rainstorm. For hunters, this also means better visibility and less scent at ground level.
Your truck bed is a flat, level surface — no rocks, roots, or slopes. Throw a mattress pad or air mattress in the bed and you have a sleeping setup that rivals most camping cots. The bed rails also provide convenient tie-down points for gear, lights, and accessories.
Most truck bed tents set up in 10-15 minutes. No staking. No guy lines. No finding a flat patch of ground. When it's time to leave, break down is even faster — stuff it in the bag, drop the tailgate, and go.
Your truck cab becomes your gear locker. Coolers, cooking equipment, and valuables stay locked inside the cab while you sleep above in the tent. No need to organize everything inside a ground tent.
| Feature | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Bed size compatibility | Tents are designed for specific bed lengths (5', 5.5', 6', 6.5', 8'). Get the wrong size and it won't fit properly — check your truck's bed dimensions. |
| Weather resistance | Look for water-resistant or waterproof fabric, sealed seams, and a rain fly. You'll be higher up and more exposed to wind than a ground tent. |
| Ventilation | Mesh windows and vents prevent condensation buildup. Truck beds trap heat — good airflow is essential in warm weather. |
| Cab access | Some tents have a rear window or pass-through that lets you access the truck cab from inside the tent. Useful for grabbing gear without going outside. |
| Setup complexity | Simpler pole systems and color-coded clips mean faster setup. Avoid tents that require you to thread poles through the fabric. |
| Floor design | A sewn-in floor protects against bugs and drafts. Some tents leave the floor open to use the truck bed liner directly. |
The OVS LD TACT Truck Bed Tent is designed for full-size truck beds and delivers solid performance at $114.99 — significantly less than canvas truck tents that run $300-500+.
Canvas truck tents like the Kodiak Canvas models are known for breathability and four-season durability. But they come at a significant price premium — typically $300-500+ — and they're heavier to transport and slower to dry after rain.
| Factor | OVS LD TACT | Canvas Truck Tents |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $114.99 | $300-500+ |
| Weight | Lighter (synthetic) | Heavier (canvas) |
| Breathability | Good (mesh ventilation) | Excellent (canvas naturally breathes) |
| Dry time after rain | Fast (synthetic sheds water) | Slow (canvas absorbs, needs drying) |
| Four-season use | 3-season (spring/summer/fall) | 4-season capable |
| Setup time | ~10 minutes | 15-20 minutes |
Our take: For most truck campers — weekend warriors, hunting trips, overlanding — the OVS LD TACT gives you everything you need at a price point that leaves budget for the rest of your gear. If you're doing extended winter camping in harsh conditions, canvas has the edge. But for 90% of truck camping scenarios, the LD TACT is the smarter buy.
If you want the elevated sleeping experience but with more space and a permanent mount, roof top tents are the next step up. OVS offers models from $999 to $10,999, ranging from compact soft-shell designs to full-size hard-shell cantilever systems.
The key differences: roof top tents mount permanently on your roof rack or bed rack, offer more headroom and floor space, and fold out over the side of your vehicle. They're pricier and require a rack system, but they're the gold standard for overlanding.
No. Truck bed tents are not designed for driving. The poles and fabric would catch wind and likely be destroyed. Break down the tent before driving — most pack down in under 10 minutes.
Check your bed length. The OVS LD TACT fits full-size truck beds (5.5-6.5 ft). If you have a short bed (5 ft) or a mid-size truck, verify compatibility before buying. Bed width is generally standard across full-size trucks.
Most truck bed tents are water-resistant with a rain fly for heavy rain. They'll handle showers and moderate rain without issue. For extended rain, ensure the rain fly is properly secured and that water isn't pooling on the fabric.
Truck bed tents are cheaper ($100-500), lighter, and require no rack system. Rooftop tents offer more space, permanent mounting, and a more "set-and-forget" setup. Browse our roof top tent collection if you want to compare options.
Some truck bed tents can be staked out on the ground as a standalone shelter — check the specific tent's design. The OVS LD TACT is designed primarily for in-bed use.
A truck bed tent is the simplest way to turn your pickup into a capable camping rig. You get elevated sleeping, quick setup, and your cab as a gear locker — all without the cost of a camper shell or rooftop tent system.
The OVS LD TACT Truck Bed Tent delivers exactly what most truck campers need at $114.99. For the full range of overlanding shelter options, browse our Overland Vehicle Systems collection or check out our roof top tents.

PRO
Love the truck tent, saved $ on hotel bills.
Heavy canvas and zippers.
CON
Prefer it had a floor
At tailgate not enough material to block bugs on lt rt sides.
Front overhang too small, should be same as rear.
Overhang pile attachments, Frt rear has three adjustment holes but can only get them in the longest of the three metal grommet holes, (Frt grommet hole tearing) ( new tent!)
With a blow up 60*80 air cushion only allows for 4’ tall. I want to walk in mine, so prefer 7’ from truck bed to top.
