Berkey Water Filters

Our Families 5 Year Review

We're a family of four, and we absolutely LOVE our Royal Berkey! It’s the perfect size for us. Since we all drink a ton of water, we usually give it a quick fill-up once a night—it's just become part of our evening routine. It not only keeps our whole family happy and hydrated but also gives us that peace of mind knowing we're drinking clean, filtered water every day.

Before the Royal Berkey, our tap water always had that chlorine aftertaste that made it tough to drink. Now, it's totally clean and I don't need to add anything to it to want to drink it. The best part? Our kids now fill their own water bottles without being asked! They actually prefer the Berkey water.

Plus a huge bonus is that is actually looks nice! Those big bulky water coolers are such eye sores, but I've actually gotten compliments on our Berkey!

Overall, 5 Stars from The Funks!

How to Clean your Berkey Water Filter

The Berkey Water Filter is more than just a filtration system; it's your personal guardian, ensuring that you and your family have access to pure, high-quality water throughout your lives. However, like any guardian, it needs a bit of care to keep performing at its best. Over time, contaminants and mineral deposits can take a toll on your Berkey, making regular cleaning a necessity.

Think of it as a spa day for your Berkey, helping it keep its efficiency and longevity, and in return, you get to enjoy peace of mind knowing your Berkey is working at its best!

We suggest you clean the lower and upper chambers once a month, while the Black Berkey Elements require a little less attention, needing a thorough clean every six months or when you notice a decrease in flow rates. Cleaning the stainless steel top and bottom chambers is a breeze once you get the hang of the few simple steps involved.

And, to make it even easier, we've prepared a step-by-step video guide for you. This video showcases how we personally pamper our own Berkey at home, walking you through the process in detail. So go ahead, give your Berkey the care it deserves!

Why Berkey Exceeds NSF Standards

  • While the original Black Berkey® Purification Elements have historically opted not to seek full, official NSF certification—often citing the expense and time involved, and instead focusing resources on performance—their commitment to contaminant reduction has been proven through extensive third-party lab testing. These tests are conducted by accredited laboratories using EPA and state-level protocols to demonstrate reduction levels far exceeding the scope of many NSF standards, often including the removal or dramatic reduction of pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, and viruses. Berkey’s core philosophy is to prioritize maximum performance and filtration versatility over standard certifications, and they transparently publish these comprehensive, independent test results for their customers.

It is important to note that the new Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements—an endorsed alternative for Berkey systems—do carry official NSF certifications. These elements are certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 for the reduction of aesthetic impurities (like chlorine, taste, and odor) and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for compliance with lead-free plumbing requirements and lead reduction. This new line provides an option that meets the demand for official certification while maintaining a strong reduction profile for a broad array of waterborne contaminants.

To Summarize:

Black Berkey® Purification Elements (Original)

  • Opted out of official NSF certification to prioritize performance and versatility.
  • Performance is proven through extensive, independent third-party lab testing using EPA and state-level protocols.
  • Test results are publicly available and show contaminant reduction levels exceeding the scope of many NSF standards (including viruses, heavy metals, and pharmaceuticals).

Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements (New)

  • An officially endorsed alternative for Berkey systems.
  • Carries official NSF certifications:
  • NSF/ANSI Standard 42 (Aesthetic impurities like chlorine, taste, and odor).
  • NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 (Lead-free plumbing and lead reduction).
  • Offers an option for customers who prefer official certification alongside a strong reduction profile.

Managing Expectations: Flow Rate, System Size, and Value

One of the first things new users notice about a Berkey system is the slower flow rate compared to a faucet or pitcher filter. It’s important to understand this not as a drawback, but as a direct result of the system’s superior performance. The slow filtration is a feature, a testament to the incredibly dense, micro-porous structure of the Black Berkey® Elements. This density is what allows them to achieve such a high level of purification, giving contaminants more time to be captured as water is forced through the tortuous path of the media. This slow, deliberate process is the difference between simple filtering and true purification.

If you find the flow rate to be too slow, there are a few simple solutions:

  • Proper Priming: Ensure your filters are fully and properly primed before first use. A dry filter can significantly restrict water flow.
  • Add More Filters: Almost all of the Berkey systems are designed to accommodate additional Black Berkey® Elements (up to four in the Big Berkey, for example). Adding more filters in the upper chamber dramatically increases the filtration surface area and thus the flow rate.
  • Filter Maintenance: If the flow slows over time, it’s a sign the filters are capturing sediment. Simply scrub the outside of the filters with a Scotch-Brite pad under running water to clear the pores and restore performance.

In addition to flow rate, the most common concerns are the system’s size and initial cost. While the system is an investment and does occupy counter space, these are the trade-offs for unparalleled performance and long-term savings:

  • Size vs. Capacity: The size provides large storage capacity, meaning you don’t have to wait for water during an emergency or during periods of heavy use.
  • Cost vs. Lifespan: The initial cost is higher, but the Black Berkey® Elements are an exceptional long-term value. Each set lasts for up to 6,000 gallons, translating to a cost-per-gallon that is pennies compared to bottled water and cheaper than most competing filter brands when considering replacement frequency. The investment pays for itself quickly, providing pure, safe drinking water for years.

Berkey Water Filters Frequently Asked Questions

How long do the Berkey water filters last?

Black Berkey water filters last for approximately 6000 gallons for a set of 2 filters. Replacement filters can be purchased in advance and stored away.

Do Berkey Water Filters remove plastic?

Yes, Berkey Water filters have been tested and remove both BPA and 1,1-Dichloroethane plastics.

How long does a Berkey Flouride filter last?

Your Berkey water purification system fluoride filter will typically need replacement after 1000 gallons of use.

Do Berkey Water Filtration Systems remove kerosene?

Yes, petrochemicals such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and crude oil are filtered out by 99.99%. It's important to remember however that the filters can become overwhelmed if the concentration of petrochemicals in the water is too high.

Why Can't Berkey Water Filters Be Sold In California?

California's health regulations are arguably the strictest in the nation. In 2009, their no-lead law effectively put a stop to Berkey water filters. The law mandates that any device intended for human consumption through drinking or cooking must be NSF certified to be lead-free. Berkey's refusal to comply led to tighter restrictions. From a public health standpoint, the rule is logical. No one wants a water filter with lead, and neither should you. However, the law is restrictive and penalizes companies that wish to safeguard their proprietary technology. Berkey's decision to forgo NSF certification is rooted in their desire to keep their patented process away from prying competitors.

Do Berkey Filters remove PFAS?

Yes. The Berkey water filter removes PFAS - chemicals that fall under the PFC (Perfluorinated Chemicals) umbrella, including PFOA, PFOS, and more. The Black Berkey elements that are a standard feature of our filters knock out these contaminants by over 99.9%.
